Soon after leaving Apex, Elder Fortress attacked and utterly destroyed the base of the top Apex section leader, Elder Suburbianj. What a bold move and a statement as well. There are clans that one may attack with impunity and there will be no consequence beyond verbal threats of death. Apex is not one of them. From Apex HQ, Elder Smidsy observed the battle reports coming in from Suburbianj's battered base and issued the command: "Apex, reduce the whole of Fortress's base to smoldering ash and cinder!" And the Apex warriors spoke with their planes, tanks and LRMW: "It is so." Smidsy observed a degree of rebuilding before dispatching another round of attacks to keep Fortress down. But Fortress had great reserves and counter attacked, again focusing on Suburbianj. The battles back and forth between Merc and Apex intensified, and soon C9C joined the fray attacking Apex. It seems though, that instead of joining forces, Merc also turned and devoured certain C9C members to feed their war efforts against Apex, and C9C responded in kind. So there was, in effect, a three way war going on. And who would this turn of events favor? The one on the top of the hill, of course.

But it came out that Fortress' goal might not have been to topple Apex. Said Fortress: "At the time, no other base on the asteroid could rival my own except Elder Suburbianj's. In my heart of hearts I wanted to know - who is the strongest? The question burned and enticed me day after day as I grew bored wandering the pristine halls of Apex HQ, brushing shoulders with this smug man who seemed to think he was the best."

Perhaps Fortress should have challenged him to a one on one duel of pistols. With Apex behind him, Suburbianj emerged victorious. But not without cost. The battles with Fortress put a ripple in his scoring progress that would reverberate to the end of the round. Having one's base completely destroyed from time to time slows progress, and Suburbianj lost his number one spot finish to comrade Elder Smidsy.

C9C, the mortal enemy of Apex, came together and broke through a glass ceiling that had been in place since round 13. Clan founder Elder Ozz finished in the top 10, along with Gen. Drizzt. C9C fended off attacks from both Apex and Merc to earn two well deserved Yellow Stars for their clan, decorations that Apex has long denied them. Unfortunately, not much is known about the behind the scenes action of C9C as they rarely broadcast their progress in the thread of notes. Perhaps it is a secretive matter.

In spite of the intense warring, Fortress finished strong to earn his second straight HOF finish. Along with him, comrade Lt. Col. Armageddon who had received an honorable mention in the Round 18 summary proved he was worthy of that notice.

The rest of the Hall of Fame was owned by Apex, with good hands played by Elders Wraith, Nastydog, Lewisha, and Maj. Brokensaint. Notably, Apex superstar Cvelle stepped down into an unactive observer role.

Looking forward, Merc is definitely a clan to watch. It has some highly skilled section leaders, not yet the depth of talent in Apex, but it has proven that as a warring clan it can go toe-to-toe against the best. C9C is also improving tremendously, showing an increased number of attacks and better coordination. Several solo players performed extremely well, including Bgd. Gen. Queller and a returned section leader of old, Col. Scilya . We shall see who moves where and is motivated by what goals in the future - and measure the impact on the wars across the face of Cincomm-9.
