END-ROUND SUMMARY

Week 1166
#10 Cpt. TheBarSetter 7,192,778 +3,450
#11 Elder ozzarkess 7,164,451 +501,213

Wow! Let me put it in RL context: Week 1166 was 11:00PM. At this point Ozz had 59 minutes to pass Barsetter, and it had to be done entirely with attacks. There would be one more week, the 12:00AM week of 1167, but in the case of a photo finish, the points gained from mining resources and holding k-drones would be subtracted out since the round ends at 11:59.

And even moreso, for those that play the game, you must also realize that Ozz needed to manage his generals very carefully. He had to find high score targets and make a specialized army for each one, there could be no waves to clear up and make a hole because if he sent all generals out to attack, there would be none back at his base in time to do a final attack. Truly remarkable. So who was his target for between 1165 - 1166? Another apex, Nastydog. By now, it goes without saying that I was watching the score with enormous interest via my phone. 59 minutes to go and only 28,327 differentiate the last spot, the spot that would make the all the difference.

There were some Apex members on at this time as well, but unfortunately for them, Barsetter was not one of them. One can only imagine how chaotic Apex HQ must've been at this point. Armies are sent swarming all over Ozz's base, Woodall has an army there he pulls back to regroup, Lewisha rushes in with an attack aiming to destroy Ozz's army before it can go get those last points, right in the middle of this BrianOHD of

So this is it. Ozz has one general left, can he find a target, build an army and escape past the Apex attacks to get the points he needs?

In what looks like a desparation attack, he goes back after Nastydog, with a much weaker army including a lot of Arrow-AD planes - something almost guaranteed to get points but not last long in battle. He narrowly escapes getting his army destroyed by Lewisha, causing Lewisha's risky attack to work out in his favor. Ozz managed to get some missiles in between Lewisha's first and second attacks, netting himself some much needed defensive score. Lewisha immeditely realized the error and pulled back, sending in a better suited army and started some flawless destruction of whatver was left at Ozz's base. But the main group had already left.

The armies as Nastydog's base are running thin, and although the tide turns and Ozz begins winning the battle, he is no longer getting the high score from attacks that he did before. Did he get enough?

Now for the twist. Barsetter was not on, and at the start of week 1166 he had no army. With exactly nine minutes to go in the round, his base received a large amount of reinforcements from allies Woodall and Stu. Just four minutes later, he is attacked by a seemingly uninterested party, a Lt. who shall remain nameless. The attack results in flawless defensive victories, giving him defensive score. From this curious turn of events (plus one other fact discovered later which will also not be printed) it seemed clearly an effort was underway to help Barsetter in his absence. A desparation move by Apex to snatch back the victory. So both Ozz and Barsetter's scores were going up right up until 11:58, 50 sec., literally! The score archive captured the score as it was at 12:00AM:

Week 1167
#10 Elder ozzarkess 7,237,691
#11 Cpt. TheBarSetter 7,220,443

A photo finish for sure. The winner is the one who has the most score minus whatever amount they made at the turn of the new week in mining and holding Kdrones. Adjusting their scores, we have:

Score at 11:59: #10 Elder ozzarkess 7,234,026 (adjusted)
#11 Cpt. TheBarSetter 7,220,443

At this point I realized there is no need to adjust TheBarSetter's score - at 11:59, for a brief moment before the attacks by the uninterested Lt. continued, Ozz snatched the lead. The Lt. continued suicide attacking after the tick and soon Barsetter's score passed Ozz, at approx. 12:11 AM. Unfortunately, none of those counted, as the round was over.

For just 12 minutes, for the first time in the entire round, Ozz held the number 10 spot. And those 12 minutes were all he needed to earn his second consecutive HOF and to prevent Apex from earning the first HOF sweep in Cincomm-9 history.

By now, if you don't know, you can see that Apex is something like Tiger Woods. He's won twice as many tournaments this year as his nearest competitor, but since he didn't win one of the majors so far people say he's in a 'slump'. For Apex, 10 HOF was their major. But this is no slump by any stretch - 9 HOF's is a record in itself and an amazing showing.

Both sides let out some long sighs of exhaustion when that round ended and gave each other congrats on well a well fought war. And this is what I was glad to see most of all - two hardened rivals able to compete at the highest level in the game but still graciously show respect for the other side and their achievements. This is probably the longest HOF summary ever, so this was a record breaking round all around! ;-)
