END-ROUND SUMMARY (cont.)

First-Half
I must say that C9C is one of the master's of diplomacy. Combined with their military skill, they turned out to be much more formidible than their former, scattered Apex opponents thought they would be.

Smidsy and brokensaint led Chaos into attacks against C9C near the start. Ozz sounded disappointed over this turn, as he felt that outsiders were influencing his former ally to war, but the C9C council gave the order and the cannons fired. Chaos was an open target for C9C.

Nastydog, leader of STC, decided to take a more cautious approach. C9C and STC entered into "talks" of a NAP, but could not "agree" on a final term length. Those "talks" wound up lasting over half of the round! Was this a setup? Who knows, but the result was STC was essentially in a NAP during the "talks", leading to a half-round NAP.

Then, there was the X-factor - the new top dog among attacking clans, Merc. Merc's M.O. is odd and counter-intuative to diplomatic thinkers, but it works for them. It's basically this: "we're all capable, support each other, attack anyone, no NAPS exist for the clan." Being a pretty small clan of 4 for a lot of the round, they still managed to outpace all other clans in terms of total attacks. But those attacks were mostly levied randomly at STC, FATE and Chaos targets. In other words, no attacks against C9C.

So between the "NAP talks" with STC and the de facto Merc alliance, C9C was free to focus mostly on Chaos. Smidsy felt like the lone attacker among miners: "I was doing the majority of attacking in chaos so really c9c only had me attacking them." According to Ozz, Defiant also pulled weight in "slow boat" attacks for Chaos against C9C, but smidsy for his part was a formidible opponent, as Ozz described: "We tried to have anti tank def in place, but we were not able to do anything about his large tank armys. Some had missles, some had bombers (more versatile than warthogs) and untill we spread units around we had no real defences. And that was just against his demolishers...once he added rumblers we had to just be patient and watch his score go up while various plans were completed."

Smidsy was so successful that for a while in the beginning he held the top spot. But fighting without much backup, it was too difficult to maintain. C9C's attacks were effective and constant. Smidsy lamented: "I was forced down the attacking route by c9c wreaking my base every night." He eventually realized: "Trying to hold off Merc and C9C cost me that top slot."

The Merc attacks were also particularly damaging to STC. Nasty observed: "Merc was our biggest problem... Animals of war that is what I think they are." Indeed, at this point Merc was fighting against three clans: STC, Chaos, and Fate.

That's in line with their M.O., since Merc claims to have no allies and no NAP's. But as the round went on, clearly there was an unspoken understanding between Merc and C9C. There was the longstanding relationship that Megatron had, also a history of tagteam attacks between Ozz and Armageddon. As proof of this unspoken alliance, Megatron felt compelled to speak to Ozz before breaking it. More on that later. The gyst is, approaching the half way mark, Merc-C9C was coming out on top of Chaos-STC. As Ozz put it: "We had a very loose alliance with merc at the time. They apparently kept STC and FATE very busy, there were a few targets we worked on together and some units were sent back and forth...we would regret that later..."
