END-ROUND SUMMARY (cont.)

Not long after the half-way point, STC decided it would be better off fighting a different opponent other than Merc. They figured to turn to their old main target, C9C. So Nasty gave Ozz a 24 week notice before attacks would begin. C9C responded by shifting special espi units into place, getting base layouts in prepartion for a new opponent. But the Merc war had taken its toll on STC, and STC must not have known they would not be facing the newbie C9C of old. By now, C9C's strength and reserves ran deep.

Ozz described the resulting war: "I guess they must not have had much left...the "meat" of the thing didn't last long, there was some back and forth and a massive hit on nasty by a few of our sr.council. nasty mailed us thanks for the beat down(he felt it was a fitting end to a fierce warrior)....the attacks back and forth never ended exactly...but then they never do."

Approaching the 2/3rd's mark, Merc grew restless. According to Megatron: "got to the point where there was not much left to fight in STC or Chaos. smidsy had stopped building armies and went 100% assassin style with CC FFG, and i was just pirating lew, nasty and other stc cause they had nothing left."

Megatron's solution to this quandry was simple: he proposed two wars should take place, Merc vs. C9C and STC vs. Chaos. The only party that agreed to this was Merc. Smidsy explained Chaos reason for rejection: "from chaos point of view we were not really equiped for a massive attacking campaign." He also felt it was too late: "if stc, merc or chaos had worked together earlier, then the top 10 would have been completly different." Ozz equally rejected the idea of leading C9C into a war against Merc: "c9c is simply not well suited to clanwar." In his view, a small clan has the advantage in official clan wars. "In short," he said, "there was no reason to agree to it and every reason for c9c to continue to try to gain HOFS...they had nothing to lose at the time...we did."

From Merc's view, a war with C9C would have been the better challenge than continuing to beat down clans they felt had already lost. C9C and Merc were the top two clans at the time, so C9C would be the only remaining challenge. But Merc "did not want to war with C9C while chaos and stc rebuild, which is what smidsy must have wanted us to do."

Nevertheless, internally Merc decided that while C9C could reject offical war, Merc had no need for C9C's approval for a flat out war. They were not going to see a repeat of the Apex dilemna in Round 16, being forced to watch their target go NAP'ed through the finish line. Communications broke down though as Megatron lost access to Cincomm-9 for awhile and Fortress broke the unspoken truce. Battles went back and forth between Fortress and C9C. Ozz describes the attacks: "fort used these massive plane forces against high rep targets and killed buildings like crazy." C9C countered and destroyed many of Fortress's fleet. Megatron returned to find the war had started. Ozz saw the brunt of it: "megs came back later with 12k champs...we couldnt hit him in space after...but we left nothing standing on the ground."

And so, who won this war? Unfortunately, there is no way to tell. Both clans earned HOF's, but this war wasn't about HOF's. As recently has come up in the forum, it would be nice if the clans used a war tracking system so we could have a record and determine which clan won a war (hint, hint).

Records.

Despite the losses that he suffered, Nastydog continually came back, and it was not without purpose. As of Round 22, he and longtime friend Smidsy became just the third and forth players to earn the red star, awarded after 10 HOF appearances. A momentuous achievement indeed, congratulations are in order for both!

Congrats to Brian, Kieu, Yan and Ashar on getting their stars, adding to the rising C9C count.

Finally, the rise of old rival C9C might have been a bit too much for old Apex memebers to stomach. I was told by Smidsy that Round 23 would see the return of Apex. What will this mean? The return of the most dominant clan of modern times? As pointed out, C9C is not the punching bag it used to be, and Merc is a force to be reckoned with. Will Apex return in top form and prove it still has what it takes to be number 1?

This reminds me, in some ways, of when the game first switched to a score based system instead of rep. The question at that time was whether the reigning clan, TLS, would be able to adjust their strat and prove they were number 1. Read about it in Round 12-13 summaries.
