Melee War, New Competition

So, Round 23. Smidsy, Nastydog and the rest of former Apex members just didn't feel right when they looked at the HoF. They had split up in part at least because they felt they were simply too powerful to exist. Round 22 and the performance of C9C made them hungry for a return, thinking perhaps the time was ripe for real competition. Was it ever!

The C9C elite had put down their staffs and girded their swords, as shepherding newbies was a way of the past for them. And Merc, which was already gaining steam and a reputation as a pack of "animals" that could not be reasoned with grew even sharper fangs and claws than before. And among this, what I must call attention to, possibly the most brilliant move of all, Chaos, the oldest clan of Cincomm-9, pulled off an outstanding tactical diplomatic maneuver. The background's set, let's get to what went down.

All eyes were on the big three (C9C, Apex, Merc) from the start, with the rational being whichever two gang up on the third, that third was history. Two other clans were watching this brawl with very different ideas as to how to capitalize off of it.

First, there was new clan Phoenix Guard (PXG), led by Jasonsky. Jason viewed Merc's top attackers Fortress and Armageddon as his biggest concern, so PXG made early plans to deal with Merc.

Second, was Chaos, led by Rookie, the chief of the miner elite. Chaos must have seen Merc as a large threat as well, because they sent two of their own top notch players to Merc. What a move, all but guaranteed safety from Merc. Regarding C9C, the longstanding relationship between Chaos and C9C was probably good for protection from that new rising power. This left only one to worry about - former super power Apex. Rookie quietly requested a NAP and Smidsy granted it. Impressive diplomatic maneuvering by Chaos, it would pay off big.

First quarter, attacks were going every way. Fortress explained his opening move: "Early in the round I decided I was going to try to become a super base instead of my usual attacker role. Big mistake. I let my rep get too high. Anyone I attacked, I got very little score from."

But attack he did. From the reports I received, Merc must have been doing the most damage among the top three, as both C9C and Apex separately reported they believed Merc had joined their rival and to gang up on them. Smidsy reported: "I thought it was going to be a free for all after all until I got double teamed by Armageddon and Ozz, seems like they have done a deal to suppress Apex." But at the same time, as Fortress reported Ozz complaining: "C9C, or at least Ozz seems to think that Apex and Merc are teaming up against him."

Apex did suggest this very thing to Merc, but Merc is, well, Merc. Said Smidsy: "I suggested to Fortress that Apex and Merc should work together to suppress C9C until the second half when we could do the Apex/Merc clanwar thing. I thought they would have jumped at the chance for a straight fight with us and Fortress did say he was thinking along the same lines and would put it to the rest of Merc. We got our answer soon enough with several attacks from Merc."

How Merc managed to survive the first quarter attacking both Apex and C9C is not clear. It could be that neither C9C nor Apex saw Merc as the biggest threat. Smidsy initially reported: "I think that C9C poses both the biggest threat and the biggest opportunity this round. They have the biggest pool of resources so should have all the advantages ..."
