END-ROUND SUMMARY
The beginning of the round was marked by a highly anticipated face-off: Gen. woodall was promoted
to Elder status and called upon former members of his original clan, FATE, to reunite
and end the Apex rule. Several high ranking players answered him and he drew members
from Chaos, some of the smaller clans and unaffiliated until FATE's number grew to 10+ strong.
Rather than go at it straight from the start, possibly for fear that the two clans' mutual
enemy C9C would end up sweeping up the broken pieces of both clans, Apex and FATE agreed
to a 400 week NAP. They went their separate ways to prepare for the upcoming war.
For Apex, the challenge appeared to be a daunting one. First, one of its clan founders and
a very powerful player, Gen. nastydog, was summoned by the legendary TLS clan. It was
an offer he couldn't refuse, so he left Apex to join TLS. Second, unlike in the prior round
with the battle for score against Chaos, FATE's members are known to be more active and
more aggressive. Where Chaos was primarily a mining clan, FATE was definitely a warrior clan.
One can't help but wonder how the round would have turned out if C9C, still boasting 30+
members including some formidible fighters, had joined with FATE from the start and launched
a suppression campaign against Apex. But the rivalry between C9C founder Gen. Ozz and FATE
leader Gen. Woodall was too much to overcome. C9C fought against FATE and Apex for the first
quarter of the round and held its ground well. As Apex leader and co-founder Gen. Smidsy
told me, "they were a thorn" but fortunately for Apex "they never organized their attacks well enough to do
major damage."
At last, it was time for the showdown. There was one X-factor that neither clan really knew
how to handle, and that was the added feature of the Repair Facility. For the first time,
in this round defenders could build and upgrade a Repair Facility that would immediately
repair some percentage of units destroyed in battle. FATE struck first, going for the jugular
with a massive series of attacks on Gen. Smidsy. The Repair Facility turned out to be a
nasty surprise, as Gen. smidsy had upgraded his significantly. He scrambled to defend using
all of his stored BC and just when it looked like FATE was about to break through his line,
they pulled back. Looking back, Gen. Smidsy said "they still don't know that another few better
planned attacks would have done it."
FATE executed a number of costly attacks that bore little fruit due in part to some of them
being rusty from long absence from a warrior clan and in part to the addition of the
repairs. Apex stored more and more resources and adopted a defensive strategy until they
were sure of victory in their attack campaigns. One by one, the FATE kdrone counts dropped
while Apex counts increased as Apex started their attack campaign with the oldest trick
in the book - FFG rushes. FATE expended many more resources trying to get their kdrones back
and soon the war swung to Apex favor.
The war turned even worse for FATE when Apex picked up a high ranking new member, Gen. suburbianj,
and their co-founder Gen. nastydog returned from meditating with Elders strange, Wraith and Kevlar
on TLS mountain. Having achieved enlightenment, he now wanted action. Both he and Gen. suburbianj
were hungry and went to work.
In the end, the stats tell the tale. FATE relied on a purely seek-and-destroy hunter strategy in the end,
looking for vulnerable bases to attack for score while Apex hoarded all of the kdrones.
